Drawing from his extensive 20-year career in higher education and numerous contributions to patents and product development, Bobbert engaged students with a thorough exploration of patents, copyrights, and trademarks - the fundamental pillars of intellectual property protection.
"Intellectual property law is deeply woven into the fabric of American innovation," Bobbert explained during his lecture. He highlighted how the founding fathers prioritized intellectual property protection, placing it prominently in Article One, Section Eight of the Constitution - even before defining the powers of war.
Students were particularly captivated by Bobbert's real-world examples and practical advice on navigating IP challenges. He shared insights from his extensive experience at Duke University, where as Senior Technologist and Innovation Program Architect, he helped build one of the most recognized innovation programs in higher education.
Bobbert's expertise spans numerous disciplines, from medical devices currently used by thousands of healthcare workers to pioneering efforts in media streaming during his tenure in the UNC system. His multidisciplinary background provided students with a unique perspective on how intellectual property considerations intersect with various industries and entrepreneurial ventures.
The session covered critical distinctions between utility patents (protecting functional inventions), design patents (protecting ornamental designs), and plant patents. Bobbert also addressed the complex challenges emerging with artificial intelligence and intellectual property, offering students forward-thinking perspectives on this rapidly evolving area.
As co-founder of Construct3D, one of the largest national conferences on makerspaces, and a frequent commentator on Industry 4.0 technologies, Bobbert brings exceptional credibility to discussions of innovation ecosystems. His military background as a United States Marine Corps veteran further enriches his distinctive approach to leadership and innovation.
The guest lecture represents Meredith College's ongoing commitment to providing students with access to industry leaders who can share practical knowledge essential for success in today's innovation-driven economy.
